In 1920, the so-called Volsted Act came into force in the United States, which prohibited the sale, manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages. It ushered in the era of Prohibition, which lasted until 1933 and which we still associate with the rise of criminal gangs who made a profitable business out of well-intentioned prohibition.
Perhaps the most famous chapter in American history at that time is the successful struggle of the Treasury Department's Special Agent Eliot Ness, who, in cooperation with the Chicago police, put an end to the illegal trade in liquor in the hands of Al Capone's organisation.
