A western-style film set in 1960s New York, it tells the story of an Arizona sheriff who accompanies a prisoner turned over to justice and loses him in the concrete canyons of Manhattan. Eastwood's erratic and dangerous man of the west must find him and in the process encounters various pimps, thieves, young hippies and cops.
