Twelve-year-old Regan (Linda Blair) suddenly develops symptoms of a strange illness that seems innocent at first, but grows worse every day. Her face takes on an increasingly horrific appearance, she screams profane and obscene words in a coarse, elided voice, hovers over her bed and her head turns at unnatural angles.
Doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists are baffled, and the young girl's condition continues to deteriorate. Regan causes the death of her mother's boyfriend and masturbates with a crucifix in front of shocked witnesses. The only possible solution to save the girl seems to be the ancient practice of scrying. There is no longer any doubt that the unfortunate girl is possessed by the devil...
