One moment you’re driving your car—and the next, some maniac slams into you from the side. You wake up bruised but alive… in an underground bunker, where a strange man tells you you’ve just won the lottery of a lifetime. That man (John Goodman) is Howard, an experienced “prepper”—someone who believes the world will one day collapse and prepares for it. He has built and fully equipped his own underground shelter. Michelle’s (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) “prize” is that he found her in the wreck of a car crash and brought her to safety just before a catastrophic event struck Earth, supposedly wiping out life on the surface. Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.), who helped build the bunker, and Michelle appear to be the only survivors around. The problem is, the air outside is said to be contaminated—so there’s no way to verify it. Michelle doesn’t believe the story. She thinks Howard is a madman who kidnapped her and is using the apocalypse as an excuse. But as more evidence emerges, it becomes harder to dismiss his claims… and easier to believe he might actually be dangerous.
