It's 1942 and Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) parachutes into the dunes of the Moroccan desert to kill the German ambassador in Casablanca. In the city, he meets Frenchwoman Marianne (Marion Cotillard), who is to play the role of his wife and help him accomplish his mission. The pretense of marital intimacy and infatuation gradually grows into real passion, and after the operation is over, they travel together to London, where they marry, despite the war. Their domestic happiness lasts only until Max learns that this, too, may be an elaborate game that could, in the final analysis, significantly affect the outcome of World War II. That's when his desperate hunt for the truth begins, and for the hope that what his superiors say about his wife is not true...
