The year is 1942. World War II. The US Navy is going through hell in the form of German U-boat attacks with their devious "Enigma Code". The crew of the USS-33 is unexpectedly called into action as Allied forces discover the German submarine U-571, which had been damaged by a previous attack. The Americans' mission now is to infiltrate the German submarine, find the decryption device on board, and not reveal to the Germans that it has fallen into foreign hands.
But of course, nothing goes as planned, and just as they are returning with the decoder to the raft that was to take the device to the American submarine, the American submarine is suddenly hit. The crew of Lieutenant Andrew Tyler (Matthew McConaughey) is forced to return to the crippled German U-571 and try to survive in desperate conditions (no radio communication and only one torpedo) the attack by a German military warship...
