In 1942, the fascist government of the so-called Slovak State adopts the Nuremberg Laws. Seized Jewish businesses are handed over to vetted Slovak citizens. The carpenter Tono Brtko (Jozef Króner), an honest and decent man, under pressure from his greedy wife and high-ranking brother-in-law, reluctantly accepts the arizona decree on the haberdashery shop of the old lady Rozalia Lautmannová (Ida Kamińska).
The half-deaf lady does not understand what is happening in the country and considers Ton her helper. At home and in public, however, Brtko pretends to "arise". In reality, he renovates old furniture at Mrs Lautmann's house, while she takes care of him like a son. The day comes, however, when all the Jews in the town are summoned for transport and Tono must confess his colour...
