A ordinary man caught in the terrifying machinery of history

Set in a small Slovak town in 1942 during the WWII fascist puppet state. Mild-mannered carpenter Tóno Brtko (Jozef Kroner) is pressured by his greedy wife and fascist brother-in-law to take over an "Aryanized" button shop owned by an elderly, near-deaf Jewish widow, Rosalía Lautmannová (Ida Kamińska). Unaware of the war and politics, Mrs. Lautmannová assumes Tóno is merely her new assistant, and a warm, protective friendship develops between them. But when the roundup for Jewish deportation arrives, Tóno is thrust into a agonizing dilemma between self-preservation and humanity...
