In the 1950s, the Coney Island amusement park is very busy. Ginny (Kate Winslet) is an unhappy former actress who now works as a waitress. Her husband Humpty (Jim Belushi) likes to drink, then gets rude and often prefers fishing to his wife. Recently, Humpty's daughter from his first marriage, Carolina (Juno Temple), has moved in with them, and while she has a troubled relationship with her father, she also needs to hide from gangsters and the FBI. When Ginny meets Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young lifeguard at the beach, she quickly falls under his spell and falls in love. In their love affair, she finds salvation from all the mistakes and disappointments of her own life. Likewise, the presence of his newfound daughter Caroline has a salutary effect on Humpty's behaviour and he experiences joy again. But Ginny and Humpty's heady hopes for a better life begin to crumble when Caroline meets Mickey for the first time...
