Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is the not-so-successful author of a teen book series who leaves Minneapolis shortly after her divorce to find new inspiration in her hometown of Mercury and attempt to find lost peace of mind by reviving memories of her high school years. To help her do this, she enlists the help of her ex, Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson), a now-married man with fresh commitments, whom Mavis is determined to win back at any cost.
