The Danish Girl takes the viewer to 1920s Copenhagen. Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) is one of the best Danish painters of his time, and his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) provides him with maximum support while trying to make a name for herself as a portraitist.
The gradual deterioration of their harmonious relationship is triggered by a trivial incident - Gerda, who is preparing a series of ballet portraits, fails to arrive with the figure, and Einar agrees to model his wife, dressed in a ballet costume. The intense relationship with the feminine element triggers enormous emotional turmoil in Einar, which he copes with by first 'innocently' playing the mysterious Danish woman Lili, and then becoming increasingly convinced that only as a woman can he be happy.
And he would be willing to do anything to make his transformation perfect. In this transformation he is faithfully accompanied by his Gerda, who, although finally breaking through as an artist thanks to her new muse Lili, has lost the love of her life...
