Through his experiences, Basil comes to understand that there is only one way to deal with life's successes and failures, and that independence is not based on the size of one's possessions, but on the greatness of one's spirit. The greatest experience the film offers is Anthony Quinn's Dionysian performance as Zorba. Quinn displays the valleys of his masterful acting, finding green palms of happiness in the wastelands of despair. The film won three Oscars in 1965 (Lila Kedr ova for Supporting Actress, Walter Lassaly for Cinematography and Vassilis Photopoulos for Set Decoration).
