Critic and filmmaker Richard Schickel, working from 70,000 feet of archival footage and Fuller’s screenplay, is behind a reconstruction that adds more than 40 minutes, transforming the truncated yet acclaimed war film into an epic masterpiece. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now regarded as one of his finest, plays a sergeant leading young infantrymen fighting from North Africa through Normandy and across Europe. The film is a combat diary of a unit—war as it truly is: lived, sweated, and bled. And perhaps even survived...
