Shy Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is shocked to discover that the love of his life, the sparkling Clementine (Kate Winslet), has had his memory erased. As a result, a hurt and angry Joel wants to pay her back with the same coin, going so far as to undergo a painless but complicated medical procedure to do so. Poor Joel, however, is completely unaware that darkness is a necessary part of light. And as the once cherished memories of Clementine gradually fade away and give way to a soulless black void, something unexpected happens.
