An American couple arrives in a picturesque French seaside resort. Writer Roland (Brad Pitt) wants to find strength, peace and inspiration to write his next book, while his wife Vanessa (Angelina Jolie) has no idea what she is doing here.
Over the years, their marriage has turned into a somewhat toxic relationship where they are alone rather than with each other, Vanessa on a deck chair on the terrace of their summer apartment, Roland in a bar with the local regulars.
The partnership's sultriness is only stirred up by the arrival of a young newlywed couple (Mélanie Laurent and Melvil Poupaud), who settle in a neighbouring apartment and remind Roland and Vanessa of how things were between them at the beginning. It soon becomes clear that these two young people could be the catalyst that will either destroy Roland and Vanessa's relationship or help to heal it...
