Spencer Tracy as successful lawyer Stanley, who is marrying off his only daughter Kay, has a lot on his mind. First, he has to check if the groom-to-be Buckley is even worthy of his treasure and, of course, check out his parents.

And then comes the engagement and the actual wedding preparations, which are firmly in the hands of Stanley's wife Ellie. What was originally planned to be a small family wedding suddenly becomes a celebration for more than five hundred guests with an orchestra and all that goes with it. And Stanley can't help but wonder how fast his hard-earned money is changing hands...
