Critters is a clever homage to 1950s B-movies, following a group of small but ferocious extraterrestrials who escape from an alien prison and land in small-town America, pursued by two shape-shifting bounty hunters. Directed by Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) and starring genre legends Dee Wallace (The Howling) and M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple), the film became a home video smash-hit, launching a franchise for these ravenous furry fiends.
Two years later, Critters 2: The Main Course saw the Krites returning for seconds, as leftover eggs hatch and terrorize the rural town of Grover’s Bend. Directed by Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers) with a script co-written by David Twohy (Pitch Black), Critters 2 is a thrilling, action-packed horror treat.
For Critters 3, acclaimed horror writer and screenwriter David J. Schow (The Crow) took the story to the big city. This film marks the feature debut of none other than Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained). It was shot simultaneously with the darker, less comedic Critters 4, in which the ferocious furballs take their battle to space, facing off against series veteran Charlie (Don Opper, Android). The cast also includes Angela Bassett (Strange Days) and Brad Dourif (Child’s Play).
