- Description
They lost their son, but they don't want to lose their grandson at any cost. The quiet life of retired sheriff George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) is interrupted by the tragic death of their son. Then fate deals them another blow. Their daughter-in-law remarries and goes to live with her new partner and his family. Naturally, she takes her young son with her.
George and Margaret might have eventually come to terms with this if their daughter-in-law's new partner had not been violent. That's why they embark on a harrowing journey halfway across the country to the Dakotas, to intervene in an emergency and take the little boy home with them. But his new family, headed by the peculiar Blanche (Lesley Manville), will not allow such a thing...
