New York police officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) has come to Los Angles to visit his wife, who is at a Christmas party in the unfinished Nakatomi building. However, German terrorist Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his unit storm the building and capture all the guests (including McClane's wife). Only McClane escapes via a fire escape. The terrorists don't want to release a few of their members, they say, but their hacker tries to break into Nakatomi's safe, which contains $640 million. McClane has to intervene.
