Two escaping prisoners are disturbed by an armed neighbour during a raid on a family home and take eight-year-old Philip hostage in an emergency. The unexpected outing begins to appeal to the boys - chases in stolen cars, hiding from comically inept pursuers (Clint Eastwood, Laura Dern). Until one of the prisoners, a primitive and bully, begins to threaten his life. The sympathetic Butch (Kevin Costner) has no choice but to eliminate his "colleague". And then it's just the two of them - and a strong bond of friendship develops between the prisoner and his willing hostage...
