Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is an idealistic young man who, like the vast majority of his peers, longs to join the army so he can help America defeat the Nazis when his country enters World War II. But he hasn't the slightest chance because he is undersized and infirm, and his only redeeming quality is the doggedness with which he gets repeatedly kicked out by draft boards. The latter ultimately decides to select him as a suitable candidate for a unique scientific experiment designed to produce Super Soldiers for America. His debut is a success and Steve becomes the perfect human being thanks to a scientific team led by Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci). The fight with the Nazis doesn't happen, though, as a far more dangerous enemy emerges. For the secret organisation HYDRA, led by the all-powerful gangster Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), has begun plotting its own plans for world domination. Dr. Erskine's secret formula for making Super Soldiers is to be an integral part of it. Steve Rogers is given a shield that will become his trademark, a group of capable sidekicks, and sets out on a mission that could grant him immortality. Or bring death.
