Caesar is the chimpanzee we met three years ago in the highly successful film, Birth of the Planet of the Apes. It was then that he, the first of the apes, acquired an extraordinarily high intelligence because of his experiments with a yet-to-be-approved cure for Alzheimer's disease. The clever ape became a sensation, but it also heralded a fundamental revision of the view of who is the true master of creation. The story of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes begins ten years after Caesar and a pack of other escaped apes hid in the deep woods near San Francisco. In the interim, humanity has been virtually decimated by an aggressive virus, the first symptoms of which appeared at the end of the first episode.
Moreover, for those who survived the viral pandemic, the collapsing world presented unexpected obstacles. The territory vacated by humans has been gradually occupied by a nation of genetically altered apes, led by Caesar. As Caesar's kingdom grows in power and capability, a new civilization is emerging, governed by new laws and rules.
