Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is nearing the end of his first term as President of the United States. He is a widower with a young daughter and is very popular with the public. His election seems certain. That is, until he meets Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), a paid political activist working for an environmental lobbying group. He takes an instant liking to her and, after a few amusing attempts, they finally manage to go on a date (which coincidentally takes place at a state dinner for the visiting French president). The relationship with Wade opens the door for his main political opponent, Senator Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss), to attack the President's character, something he was unable to do in the previous election because Shepherd's wife was recently deceased at the time...
