In January 1879, the British launched a war against the Zulu Kingdom, an indigenous state in South Africa. They expect to achieve an easy victory with a well-trained and modern army of 1,350 soldiers. However, a bloody conflict ensues in which the British are overrun by a Zulu army of four thousand and almost completely slaughtered. After this victory, the Zulu warriors attack the small outpost of Rorke's Drift, where 150 British troops are defending a large amount of supplies. On Wednesday, 22 January 1879, the Zulu warriors repeatedly attempt to attack it throughout the day and night, but to no avail. They fail to break through her defences and eventually withdraw back to their own territory. The British public, hungry for heroes in the wake of the debacle at Isandlwana, is delighted with the result of this daring action, and the defenders of Rorke's Drift are awarded eleven Victoria Crosses...
