The adage that the road to hell is paved with good intentions is true in this story. Young scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) is developing a cure for Alzheimer's disease, which his father (John Lithgow) also suffers from. However, the promising research stalls due to the unwanted side effects that the experimental animals exhibit after being injected with the drug. Disappointed, the scientist leaves the research to care for his father and, as a bonus, secretly takes the baby chimpanzee whose parents died in Will's experiments.
The chimp, Caesar, gradually begins to show high intelligence, and Will realizes that the effects of his drug are probably to blame. He begins secretly administering it to him, inadvertently opening the gateway to human destruction. Over time, the increasingly intelligent animal finds himself in a nature reserve, where he slowly begins to lead the other apes in mounting a rebellion against those who killed his parents and imprisoned him in this "dandy prison".
