Ten years after a failed attempt to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of humankind in the war against the machines, a new Terminator, the T‑1000 model, returns from the future to Los Angeles to eliminate the already born John Connor. Adult Connor, in 2029, sends a second Terminator, the T‑800, into the past to protect him.

Both machines independently search for young John. The boy learns that the T‑800 is programmed to protect him, and with its help he rescues his mother from a psychiatric hospital, where she is being treated for alleged schizophrenia.
