"Some windows should remain closed. Even though he knows he should be sitting at his computer writing another book, or at least getting out of his old cottage for a while and walking his dog around the lake, successful writer Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) sleeps up to 16 hours a day on his favourite couch. He's in the midst of a painful divorce, and all the circumstances surrounding the breakup are becoming increasingly uncomfortable. The whole affair saps his energy and creative potential, and Mort is forced to face a particularly difficult creative block that prevents him from putting together even a simple sentence. Just when it seems like nothing worse can happen, a psychotic stranger named John Shooter (John Turturro) shows up on the doorstep of his shack, accuses Rainey of stealing his story, and demands compensation. Despite Rainey's attempts at reconciliation, Shooter becomes increasingly insistent and aggressive. He uses his deranged sense of justice to justify everything - including a possible cold-blooded murder. Drawn into a frantic game of cat-and-mouse, Rainey slowly discovers that he has far more cunning and determination than he ever thought. Eventually, he realizes that the indomitable Shooter may know him better than he knows himself.
