Jiří Trnka is regarded as one of the founders not only of Czech, but of world animation. The puppet film Old Czech Legends draws partly from Jirásek’s text, but significantly expands it with the original historical source of Cosmas and, in its modern interpretation, adopts Vladislav Vančura’s penetrating poetic vision.

Even today, the film captivates with its expansive staging and its directorial and artistic conception, which—despite the small size of the puppets—manages to present the heroic epics of Czech mythology in their full monumentality. Entirely new was the artistic design of the puppet characters, which needed to convincingly embody the heroic spirit of the story.
