In Paris, Jacques Sauniére (Jean-Pierre Marielle), the chief curator of the Louvre, is murdered. Before he died, he had managed to hint at many symbols and ciphers around him. Police Captain Bezu Fache (Jean Reno) summons New York University professor and renowned symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), who was currently on a lecture tour in Paris, to the murder scene. He suggests to Fache what symbols can mean. Soon Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), who, for a change, works in the Parisian decryption department, arrives on the scene. They both begin to realise that they have not been drawn together by mere coincidence, but that Jacques Sauniére has a message to deliver. A frantic chase ensues, in which Robert and Sophie become both seekers of the legendary Holy Grail and prey for the police captain and someone else. More mysterious and more powerful, someone who gives the Vatican itself the creeps...
