In Paris, Jacques Sauniére, the head keeper of the Louvre, was murdered. Before he died, he had a lot of symbols and ciphers around him. Police Captain Bezu Fache summons New York University professor and renowned symbologist Robert Langdon, who was currently on a lecture tour in Paris.
He suggests to Fache what symbols can mean. Sophie Neveu, who, for a change, works in the Paris decryption department, soon arrives on the scene. They both begin to realise that they have not been drawn together by mere coincidence, but that Jacques Sauniére has a message to convey.
A frantic chase ensues, in which Robert and Sophie become both seekers of the legendary Holy Grail and prey for the police captain and someone else. More mysterious and more powerful, someone who gives the Vatican itself the creeps...
