Rider Shane arrives on the plains and pastures of Wyoming and is hired to work by farmer Joe Starrett. In the process, he sees the entire region being tyrannized by a wealthy, self-satisfied rancher named Rufus Rykem - with one goal in mind: to drive the homesteaders off the land he needs for his herds. It is he, along with the men he hires, who takes advantage of the fact that the nearest sheriff is days away, and so the law" is in the hands of one who is ruthless and will stop at nothing. Starrett attempts to team up with other farmers against Ryker, but they do not find enough strength to resist.
Shane is the only one who can stand up to the lawlessness and increasing violence. He befriends Starrett's son, Joey, who looks up to him admiringly and expects him to help. When Ryker hires gunslinger Jack Wilson to take out his rivals, it's the perfect time for Shane to reveal his true colors...
