Architect Sam (Tom Hanks) is grieving the loss of his wife. His young son wants his dad to find someone new, so he calls into a popular late-night radio show and convinces Sam to speak on air. Among thousands of listeners is Annie (Meg Ryan), who hears him in her car and is instantly intrigued. Sam is a believer in the magic of love, a bit of an idealist; Annie is a practical journalist full of doubts.
