Wealthy Lina MacLaidlaw (Joan Fontaine) runs away against her parents' wishes with handsome Johnnie Aysgarth (Cary Grant) and then discovers he is in debt and penniless. Johnnie cannot find a job, and he sells the wedding gifts from his father-in-law to pay off the debts. Lina is convinced that Johnnie will never leave her. Johnnie’s friend Beaky (Nigel Bruce) dies under mysterious circumstances, and Lina fears that Johnnie is responsible for his death. Johnnie denies it but warns her not to tell the police about his financial dealings with Beaky. Lina finds a book about poisons among Johnnie’s belongings. She then learns that Johnnie had unsuccessfully tried to withdraw her life insurance. However, it can only be claimed after her death...
