The desire to fulfill a lifelong dream is a driving force for almost everyone. But the kind of determination that Michael Edwards (Taron Egerton) has carried within him since childhood is rare. His dream seems simple and straightforward: to become an Olympian and represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games in any sport whatsoever. As a young boy, Michael tries many different athletic disciplines to convince both himself and those around him that he lacks the talent required for sports that would allow him to compete in the Summer Olympics. Therefore, he turns his focus to the Winter Games. However, he has little luck or talent even in alpine skiing. Most people would have given up long ago, but Michael is not like that. His last chance is ski jumping, mainly because there are very few ski jumpers in Britain with Olympic ambitions—in fact, there are none. He decides to learn from the best, so he leaves his home country and sets off for the Alps on his own. He watches the jumpers for a while, then climbs onto the ramp and takes off. After several painful falls, he realizes that he cannot do it without a coach—at least not if he wants to make it to the Olympics and stay alive. Enter Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), a maintenance worker at a ski resort, a brawler and a drinker, but also a former ski jumper who was once expelled from the American Olympic team. Bronson takes the stubborn and persistent self-taught jumper under his wing and begins teaching him not only how to jump, but also how to survive the sport. Gradually, he comes to recognize Michael’s determination and indomitable will, which ultimately allow them to achieve their great dream together.
