Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy and brilliant M.I.T. student who finds the answer to his college funding problems in gambling. He is offered membership in a group of the most talented students who go to Vegas every weekend under false identities, where they use their skills to make good money at cards. Their potential is discovered by a quirky math professor and statistics genius, Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey), and together they devise a way to beat the gaming system.
By learning to count cards and mastering a complicated system of secret signals, they are able to win fabulous sums in the casinos. Succumbing to the vision of money, the Las Vegas lifestyle and the smart and good-looking member of their team, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben takes more and more risks. Although card counting isn't illegal, the stakes are high and soon it's not just a matter of navigating the cards, but also the necessity of not getting caught by the menacing head of security at one of the casinos: Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne).
