The heroes of "Waste" are three boys whose home is a central landfill in Rio, Brazil. Every day they search it in the hope of finding something that will improve their lives, at least for a while. Little do they know that the very next find will change their lives irrevocably. The extraordinary find that awaits Rafael, Gard and Rato is a wallet containing a seemingly unrelated jumble of notes, clippings and a single key.
But when the police take an interest in it and offer a substantial sum as a find, they realise they may have found something very important. Deciding not to turn the find over to the authorities, they embark on an exciting and adventurous but dangerous journey, the contents of the wallet helping to determine their direction.
For it is not the standard clutter we all keep in our wallets, but a sophisticated code, the cracking of which could put one high-ranking person on his toes. That's why the police have mounted such an exhaustive search. That's why one detective is looking so hard for Rafael, Gard and Rato. The closer they get to solving the mystery, the greater the danger. After all, who would miss three boys living in a dump?
