It is shortly after the war, and ten-year-old Eda Souček and his friend Tonda also attend a boys' class in a school on the outskirts of Prague. Like the rest of their classmates, Eda and Tonda completely ignore the resigned teacher Maxová's attempts to teach them and are more interested in the colour of her panties than in the curriculum. Not surprisingly, one day the teacher goes mad and a new teacher takes her place.
His name is Igor Hnízdo, and he is unlike any teacher the boys have ever known. He wears a military uniform, has a real pistol on his belt and immediately imposes a rigid regime in the classroom, which includes a very brisk caning and engaging stories about wartime experiences, which the teacher intersperses with the subject matter. Although his methods are unexpectedly effective, clouds soon begin to gather over the teacher. Not only do some not quite believe his heroic stories, but his weakness for the fairer sex begins to show.
The tramman's disgraced wife, whom Hnízdo leaves for the flirtatious students, the Fabian twins, writes a denunciation and the teacher is threatened with punishment for a moral offence. Although Eda, like the others, stands up for his favourite teacher, he begins to realise that the real hero for him is in fact not the flamboyantly heroic teacher, but his meticulous dad, Fan Souček, with his subtle, mundane yet genuine heroism...
