The drama Emergency Exit is very similar to Mendes' Oscar-winning American Beauty. Here, too, we see how dysfunctional is the most general idea of the fulfilment of the American Dream, i.e. a peaceful family life in a house in the suburbs. However, the bitter experience of Frank and April Wheeler predates the story of American Beauty by a few decades.
Although young married couple Frank and Abby (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) also live an unexciting middle-class American life like their neighbours, they themselves feel they do not belong in this environment. April is not tempted by a career as the protector of the home hearth and educator of her own children. She would like to become an actress, so she tries to persuade Frank to move to Paris, as she sees a role for herself in the city kissed by the muses.
The monotonous career of an office rat doesn't appeal to Frank either, but instead of dreaming of Paris, he indulges in alcohol and a glamorous colleague. As their shared plans and desires crumble, so does their relationship, which reaches a breaking point. A radical solution is the only way back to the top, but they both need to find the strength to do it. Without this basic condition, their efforts will end in doom...
