In the first film, American teenager Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suffer from terrifying nightmares – and soon discovers that her friends are having the same disturbing dreams. In those dreams appears the horribly disfigured former child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who has the power to kill them in their sleep. Freddy is back to take revenge on the children of those who burned him alive for his crimes – and the only way to escape is to stay awake. But Nancy knows she can’t stay awake forever...
In the second installment, Freddy’s Revenge, the story picks up five years later. The Walsh family moves into the house once occupied by Nancy, and soon their son Jesse (Mark Patton) begins experiencing nightmares. Along with his girlfriend Lisa, he tries to understand what’s happening to him – and eventually becomes convinced that Freddy has taken control of his body to continue his killing spree.
In the third film, Dream Warriors, Nancy returns as a psychiatrist. She joins forces with Dr. Neil Goldman (Craig Wasson) when a group of teenagers at a psychiatric hospital start sharing the same nightmare. Nancy soon realizes that Freddy has returned and is targeting the descendants of those who once killed him.
In the fourth film, The Dream Master, Freddy has already eliminated all the children of his original enemies. Now he begins to target their friends. Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox), one of the endangered teens, has a unique ability to pull others into her dreams. She is the Dream Master – the only one who can stop Freddy’s rampage.
In the fifth film, The Dream Child, Alice is expecting a baby. Freddy finds out and starts manipulating the unborn child’s dreams, hoping to use its birth as a gateway back to the world of the living. Alice must face Freddy’s nightmare one final time.
In Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Freddy has wiped out all the children in his hometown and is searching for new victims. He finds a home for troubled teens and soon indulges in his murderous desires once again. This film was originally intended to be the final chapter in the series.
However, director Wes Craven changed his mind and in 1994 made Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, in which he and the producer appear as themselves. They convince a now-adult Heather Langenkamp (from the first film) to return to Elm Street one more time. She and Robert Englund reprise their roles – but this time, they can’t leave their characters behind, even after stepping off the film set...
