Elise, Brenda and Annie, former school friends, meet up after many years at the funeral of another friend, Cynthia, who has taken her own life. The friends realise they share a common fate: their husbands left them in middle age and found new partners. All three friends receive letters from Cynthia (written before her death), in which she urges them to stick together. The trio meet in a restaurant and agree on a joint course of action against their unfaithful partners. They pull out all the stops to see their plan through to the end, with the aim of helping other wives in similar situations.
