Who Wants to Kill Jessie?

The Czechoslovak science fiction comedy directed by Václav Vorlíček ranks among the cult films of the 1960s. It uniquely combines live-action film with comic book elements and offers a satirical view of contemporary society.

The main heroine is Dr. Růžičková (Dana Medřická), a scientist who invents a device that makes it possible to transfer dreams into reality. Her husband, Professor Růžička (Jiří Sovák), soon becomes a victim of his own dream – as the beautiful comic book heroine Jessie (Olga Schoberová) enters the real world. Along with her, however, her enemies also come to life from the comic pages – a muscular gunman and a villain in a cowboy hat.

The film employs innovative visual effects, typical comic-style speech bubbles with sounds and texts, and playfully parodies the clichés of popular culture and scientific experiments. Thanks to the combination of the attractive Olga Schoberová, witty humor, and an unusual visual style, the film achieved international success and remains a classic of Czechoslovak cinema.
