Danny La Russo moves with his mother from New Jersey to California. He doesn't like his new surroundings very much, especially when he comes into conflict right from the start with the local gang of teenagers, led by the confident Johnny, who hates the fact that Danny is successfully courting his ex-girlfriend Ali.
Danny wants to learn karate to compete with the physically stronger boys who attend the local Japanese martial arts school. An old Japanese man, Miyagi, takes Danny in, negotiates a truce with Johnny's group, and promises to prepare the boy for the local showdown. He tries to explain to his pupil the basics - mastering karate is meant to prevent violence, not provoke it.
At first Danny doesn't understand why he should be painting Miyagi's fence and polishing cars instead of practicing his strikes, but the Japanese man proves the boy right in his approach. Danny starts the tournament hesitantly, but gradually improves and makes it to the finals...
