In this now legendary 1986 film, based on Umberto Eco's equally famous novel, we find ourselves in a Benedictine abbey where a mysterious death has occurred. The year is 1327 and the monks are convinced that the apocalypse is imminent. The abbey is currently hosting a council to address the beliefs of the Franciscans, who argue that the church should divest itself of its property. One of the council participants, the venerable and respected Franciscan friar William of Baskerville, is asked by the abbey's leadership to help uncover the cause of the sudden death. However, as the investigation gets closer to uncovering the secret the abbey wants to keep secret, more deaths occur. It is now impossible to prevent the Holy Inquisition from becoming involved in the whole affair.
