Acclaimed writer Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) is newly married to the lovely Elaine (Priscilla Lane), but is afraid to bring her into the family. For he discovers that his two seemingly harmless aunts, Abby (Josephine Hull) and Martha (Jean Adair), are murdering old men - offering them poisoned elderflower wine, and the corpses are then disposed of by Morty's crazy brother Teddy (John Alexander), who fancies himself President Roosevelt.
