The island of Blp used to be a place where Vikings fought dragons day and night. But then a young dreamer, Hiccup, trained the dragon Toothless, befriended him and, most importantly, explained to everyone that humans and dragons can live in harmony. The story jumped forward five years, and Blp became a dragon paradise in the meantime, where humans and dragons respect and love each other. Hiccup's best friend Astrid is the star of the popular dragon races, in which she playfully defeats the other Viking teenagers, while Hiccup prefers solitary flights of panic with Toothless, during which they chart unknown territories and discover new worlds and new dragons.
One of their adventures leads them to a hard-to-reach ice cave that is home to hundreds of unknown wild dragons. They also meet the mysterious Dragon Rider, who turns out to be Hiccup's long-lost mother Valka. But there is no time for a loving embrace between mother and son as the clouds gather over the coexistence of humans and dragons thanks to Drago, the powerful and self-proclaimed "dragon god" served by the cocky dragon hunter Eret.
These two pose a danger that Hiccup and Toothless can do nothing about on their own, so they get the old gang together, which, in addition to Astrid, includes Straw, Snoplivec, Rybinoha, and the twins Jafan and Rafana. Along with them, however, Hiccup's father, the Viking chief Kliďas the Great, and especially his mother Valka will have to confront the powerful enemy. Learning to pull this disparate group together will be extremely difficult. But without it, the people of Blp will not stand a chance...
