The Ninth Heart (Czechoslovakia, 1978), directed by Juraj Herz, is an enchanting fantasy fairy tale blending mystery, humor, and classic adventure elements. The poor student Martin (Ondřej Pavelka) unexpectedly finds himself at the royal court, where he becomes involved in the strange case of Princess Adriena (Anna Maľová). The princess has fallen into a mysterious sleep, and no one knows why. Martin embarks on a journey filled with magic, peculiar creatures, and dangerous challenges in order to uncover the secret of the nine hearts and save her life.
The film features memorable performances by Julie Jurištová, Josef Kemr, Juraj Kukura, and František Filipovský, adding charm and the subtly dark atmosphere characteristic of Herz’s work.
The movie is now being released for the first time on Blu-ray, offering its best image quality to date.
