After his release from Sing Sing, notorious robber Eddie Hawkins, known as Hudson Hawk, is contacted by mobsters and forced to steal a valuable equestrian statue by Leonardo da Vinci from a New York auction house.
Together with his regular partner Tommy, they hand the statue over to the Mafia. Later, it turns out that the whole thing was just a rehearsal. Hudson Hawk is kidnapped by CIA agents to Rome to steal more da Vinci artifacts for them and a Mafia gang led by the hilarious duo of Darwin and Minerva Mayflower, who hide the alchemical secret of making gold from lead.
Hudson Hawk, in collaboration with Vatican agent Dr. Baraglia, investigates the Mayflowers' diabolical plan for world domination, but they're far from finished...
