Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a faded 1980s pop star whose only remaining fans are die-hard nostalgics attending small-town fairs. One day, he is approached by media darling and pop sensation Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), who asks him to write songs for her new album and perform a duet with her. Everyone deserves a comeback, but Alex hasn’t written a single note in years, and songwriting was never exactly his strength. Now he has only a few days to create a hit. That’s when the charming and unpredictable florist Sophie (Drew Barrymore) enters his life, bringing with her a remarkable gift for words that proves invaluable to Alex. Sophie is recovering from a failed relationship with writer Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott), so she is hesitant to work with Alex, whose romantic reputation is far from ideal. But emotions can’t be controlled, and music has an extraordinary power. As Alex and Sophie grow closer, they begin to realize that if they want to find love and success, they must first confront their own fears…
