The Burning Bush is a three-part drama made for HBO by renowned Polish director Agnieszka Holland. This drama is based on real events and features real characters. It focuses on the alarming act of student Jan Palach, who burned himself to death in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1969. Lawyer Dagmar Burešová later takes up his legacy and represents the Palach family in a lawsuit against a Communist MP who disparaged Palach's sacrifice for the nation's freedom. The story of Jan and Dagmar is a story of basic human values such as truth, honour, justice and courage. The struggle for freedom, moral principles, sacrifice and perseverance in a time of despair united the occupied nation. Twenty years later, the totalitarian regime was swept away. The twentieth anniversary of Palach's death in 1989 inspired freedom-minded people to protest, which eventually led to the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia and the Iron Curtain in Europe.
