At the beginning of the 18th century, Great Britain is ruled by Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), the last of the Stuarts, who has made a rather inglorious mark on history. She is shy and overlooked, suffers from painful gout and is not very educated, which makes her the perfect victim of manipulators. Her only support in life is Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and their relationship gradually grows into a kind of amorous symbiosis. As a result, Sarah has risen to the highest circles of the British aristocracy and practically reigns as an insecure queen. From behind the Queen's throne, she makes all the important decisions about the running of the state and the ongoing war over the Spanish Succession. At the same time, he guards his position closely and will not allow anyone who tries to influence the queen. The only person she underestimates is her cousin Abigail (Emma Stone), who has come to court begging for a job as a servant after her family goes bankrupt. Sarah accepted her out of pity. Little does she know, however, that the ambitious Abigail could threaten her role as the Queen's favourite. So while Abigail is rapidly rising up the social ladder thanks to the popularity of the monarch, Sarah is beginning to fall out of favour. And this cannot go unrewarded...
